Tidbits: Amsterdam

Rakang: This really is the best Thai restaurant in the world. Its been my all round favorite place for the last 5 years, and everytime I visit the food, service and ambience has been outstanding. Whats really great is that you can have any dish on the menu made with tofu instead of meat, nothing pre-made just fresh and delicious. Approx. €50p.p Elandsgracht 31. Tel: 020 620 9551 http://www.rakang.nl/

Feijoa. Amsterdam: My favorite barman (Sergej) has opened his own bar. Its cool and relaxed, kinda a hip but not over the top - wannabe / pretentious way. Service as always reins supreme, as does the cocktails... these and the nice international mix of people will make it a home away from home. Luckily its minutes away from my house, which makes it only a wobbly bike ride away. Vijzelstraat 39. Tel: 06 53726137

Frenzi: Looking for a place to hang, read the papers over a relaxing Sunday bruch – then this is it. Plus one of the few places that can cook up a decent omelet (although depends a little on whose cooking), has good coffee, service and fresh OJ. And its in the my hood! Zwanenburgwal 232, (on corner of staalstraat) tel: 020 423 5112

Puccini: This is without a doubt the best chocolate in the world – I often buy them as gifts for friends all around the world and all agree they are the BEST. Just going into the shop is real experience as they make them out the back so smell and vision of such delicious mouth watering yummy homemade bonbons is already a treat. Enjoy…. Address: Staalstraat 17 or Singel 184 Amsterdam . www.puccinibomboni.com

Altmann: What a treat, so unusual to have such cute and friendly service, amazingly yummy food, and a chic yet cozy atmosphere. Food like the ambience was a mix of Asian and European, the crème brulee was something I could have had 3 of…. It was just too good. We were completely spoilt, and looking forward to the next visit. Aprox: €60p.p. Address: Amsteldijk 25. Tel: 020 662 7777. http://www.altmann.nl/

D'antica: For me this is the best Italian food - the waiting times are long, sometimes the service is not as good as other times. The prices are high, however the food does compenstate for everything else. The owners are friendly and its a big place so groups are also possible, but make sure book a table. Approx. €60p.p Reguliersdwarsstraat 80/82 . Tel: (020) 623 38 62

XtraCold: This is so new, even I have not been back long enough to visit - however I've heard so much about it, that its high on my list of place to check out. Love the design and am only hoping its not as cold as it looks - but all the more reason to drink temprate vodka - and curl up on the sofas.. Amsel 194. Tel: 020 320 57 00 Website

Hotel Arena: Whats cool about this place other than the fact it's an old orphanage, is that it's a hotel/ bar/ restaurant/ club... so all in all you can have the time of your life and just crawl upstairs to your room. Its decent pricing, near the centre, good food, and great DJ's also make it an attractive place to stay. Just hope the noise doesn't keep you up. Aprrox: €100-120 (hotel). De Hollandsche Manege: This is one of Amsterdams best keep secrets, the ideal spot to sit and have a coffee in the cafe of the oldest riding schools, watching the riding lessons take place and appreciate the days gone by while you get away from the hustle and bustle outside. Or you can be daring and take a lesson yourself of course. Vondelstraat 140. Tel: 020-6180942 Website...

Nemo: A unique architectural building is actually a great science and technology musuem, whose roof is transformed in teh summer months to a city beach. It has the most amazing views of the city, sand pits, Dj's on the weekends, and plenty of spots to chill and soak up some sun (only down side is lack or ocean and sun of course!!!) Oosterdok 2 . Tel: 020-531 32 33 Website...

Lo Stivale d'oro: Wanting to experience not only the tast of Italy but also the Italian prices then this is the place to eat. Atmosphere leaves a little to be desired - but in comparison the friendly really family service, great food and cheap prices (like in Italy), this is a great place to pick up a pizza for at home, or for a quick dinner. Approx. €25p.p Amstelstraat 49 . Tel: (020) 638 73 07
