Tidbits Reviews: Watch

Recommondations and reviews of meaningful, inspirational, fun movies to lose yourself in;

Mar Adentro : Was so tired, and sorry for myself (after late night out), then sat down to with many a tissue, watching what is without doubt one of the best movies I have ever seen. These Spanish films have a way of bringing stories to life that Hollywood doesn't manage. I think it is because focus on of the human side of the story, this is not about law or euthanasia per se but its one man's story for his right to the freedom of choice. His hopes, dreams, joy, love and sadness – his positive and humorous view despite the situation.

The Visitor: Brilliant film, its about a man whose wife died – his life is dull and robotic (recognize this a lot in the world around us), content with the status quo. He finds some illegal immigrants sub-renting his New York apartment, and gets rather entangled in their lives.. won't ruin the plot. Definitely not a Hollywood film, but more likely to be situations that happen in some places and time everyday – which is what makes it even more real and hence touches/ reaches deeper. Website

Lugares Communes: Been trying to up my Spanish by watching a lot of Spanish language films, and its just so refreshing as they are a little anti-Hollywood. Very real, raw with thought provoking dialogue – and not necessarily a happy ending but empowering ones non-the-less. This is a story about a married couple, he's a writer and critic, and is forced into an early pension… and his / their thoughts lives follow on this note. Don't want to ruin the story, you'll have to see for yourself.

Simon Birch: Get tissues, this touching story is about 2 boyhood friends, one born with a physical disability – but believes he was born this way for a reason – so despite the problems he has to deal with has an amazing adversity to it all – and rises above so much. And does get to where he is going in the end – but not before making anyone watching cry a lot in the process. . ---------Buy via Amazon

Wag the Dog : Brilliant film that makes one question just how much of what is one seeing (when it comes to politics) is real and how much is just a PR spin. So much of those in power today are just that, never ceases to amaze me how we manage to see anything with so much wool over our eyes. This is a humorous look at the spin behind a particular government tale.Buy Amazon

The Bucket List: Two strangers become friends in hospital with cancer, create a list of all the things they would like to do before they die… a reminder of how much we take things for granted, how strange our culture is to believe money will bring wealth to life over friendship and love, and how important it is to not only have dreams but also bring them to life. While its a good film think I would have rather seen an independent make something of it, now it's a little to Hollywood. Buy Amazon

Spring, summer, fall, winter... and spring: Stunning cinema- tography matches this spiritual, thoughtful and wistful Korean movie. It flows along carrying you with it, spell bound and floating. It is the story of the student of an old wise monk, who grows up through the seasons of his life. Loved the location too, wish it really existed something like it now and in the past…. Syriana: Hats off to Mr. Clooney for supportinga few thought provoking films. This is a great film (other than the torture scene which I admit I skipped), about a CIA agent and how he slowly unravels a few truths about the government he works / worked for. Not everything is what it seems. And as in real life non of us can begin to imagine the what and the why behind particular politics…. Although we are safer kept in the dark should any government have this kind of power, lLeaves you thinking…. Go to website.... ---------Click here to buy via Amazon....

Good Night and Good Luck: Loved this movie, as above, I wish there were endless more movies like it. Ones that challenges the norm and makes you think about your life and the media and reality. We as humans have a certain right to the truth, this movie shows how advertisers and the media control that truth seeking to only enlighten us with what they think we need to know. And yet we put up with it.... Go to website... .--------- Order via Amazon...

The Insider: A story based on real life events. A researcher goes to work in the tobacco industry and finds certain truths about the addictive additives added to the product, but the company tries to bribe him, when that fails ruins and tries to take his life. Of course corporations have so much they would prefer we didn't know. And that they would go to any lengths to keep that from us doesn't surprise me. An interesting, thought provoking movie – and well worth seeing. Buy via Amazon....

Peaceful Warrior: I loved this movie, at times it reminded me a little of a grown up more spiritual version of the karate kid. But the story is truly amazing, and it had so many important lessons of life that I was unable to grasp it all in one sitting – so I can't wait to see it again…. I won't ruin the story for you … but it's about inner strength and the fact that we can make anything happen so long we don't stand in our own way… ;-) Go to website.... --------- Buy via Amazon....

A good year: A bit of a Hollywood film feel good film I agree, which on occasion I actually don't mind. It reminded me a bit of how we can get so caught up in living that we forget what we actually live for. Is it ever to late to change? Don't wan to ruin the end….. Bridge to Terabithia: Kinda a kids movie but also for adults. I think we can all relate to the wanting to escape and create our own reality. Although not so Hollywood that it has a happily ever after it does leave you with a warm glow and longing for the long gone days when the world was whatever you wanted it to be – and to be honest, if look hard enough it still is just that. Freedom Writers : I thought this was some kind of remake of Dangerous minds, but actually it's a true story and while some aspects are the same – teacher and challenging students, it does show a courage and wisdom of its own. Basically the students are asked to keep a diary which eventually gets published. Got to: Freedom writers foundation.--------- Movie Website.... --------- Or buy via Amazon

Kundun: Is the biography of the Dali Lama. While I know the story well I had not as yet experienced it and saw it from this point of view. The responsibility he has and must live with – and what Tibet as a country went through. What I still find so hard to believe is that it continues under plain view today. Sicko: Yes love him or hate him to me he speaks of many unseen issues that no one else seems to dare to bring to light let alone stand up for. This time it's the American Healthcare system, which for me as a European is a shocker…. I admire the questions he asks, the solutions he comes with and respect the courage he has to stand up and say ‘this just isn't working'. Anyway watch it with an open mind, and then form your own opinion. It reminds me to be grateful that I live in a country with great healthcare where human life is still more valuable than money…. Provoked: Why wasn't this story told. I remember years ago on the news people dying in Rwanda , but to what extent I had no idea – and as terrible as it was I would have like to hear about it. It's an gripping film that everyone should be made to see so as to realise and really work to make sure these kinds of genocide's don't continue to happen. Continued in my blog.... ------ Buy amazon

Provoked: I almost walked out of this movie, due to my inability to watch movies that contain violence, however remembering that this was a true story and someone's life I felt compelled to stay. Anyway I didn't regret it, what a great film, and an incredible story. How small iis our cultural understanding – how little are we able to empathize and how much can one bare before breaking. But mostly it's a story of courage, strength and justice – which should be wake up call for others in similar situations… Can they walk out before they break or are broken. The Secret: Yes, I know I know, Oprah is raving as is everyone else, it really is something though - I would just suggest you go and see it for yourself... and then its up to you where you want it to take you from there. Go to website.... ------ Buy amazon

What the Bleep do we know? FIrst piece of advice is not to watch this after a night on the town... for you need all braincells at full attention. However once you get the grasp of it all, it really blows your mind... and I am still reeling..... and will need to watch it a few times more to really get it, but am sure it will be well worth the effort. V for Vendetta. Such a good movie, this is what the world could look like should we let it continue in the direction it is, and then all we would have to hope for is an equally intelligent superhero… Um, wonder if that's possible. Anyway a fun – brain stretching – interesting – yet meaningful story… Website... ------- Buy amazon,,

The Corporation: A very interesting film about corporations and the power they have. It could put you off ever working in one, if working in one hasn't done so already. I think more movies like this should be made, that look at some of the reality of what happens, which is very different to what the media/ governments or corporations tells us.. Bagdad Cafe : The sort of movie I like, kinda strange but with meaninful undertone. Life is not always what you expect at first glance - but you have the power to change your perception and this movie covers this lesson incredibly well. Buy amazon...

An inconvenient truth. Have not seen it but certainly plan to. From what I have seen it has had rave reviews and highlights where we are at as humanity with the whole global warming issue. Website... ------- Buy amazon....

What...

This weeks fab tidbit....

And for fun.....

Don't mess with the Zohan . This might almost be one of the most ridiculous films I have ever seen which is why it is without doubt also one of the most funny. And of course I love the fact it pokes such fun at things that everyone else takes so seriously but really is in need of being laughed at. Story is about a Israeli secret agent who just wants to be a hairdresser – and sets out to follow his dream. So it does have a point… and a lot of hummous.

Borat. Much like the zohan movie, this pokes a wee bit of fun at things that should not be taken to seriously – especially in regards, to cultural differences, ignorance and really does take the jam out of anyone who takes things too seriously – and the way in which it is done in a way that takes the absolute miky. So about man from some strange country who takes a cultural tour of America . Can't wait till his next movie is out.
